Buying a used engine is a big investment. Most failures happen because buyers skip simple checks. This is a step-by-step inspection guide any mechanic or car owner can follow.
1、Check External Condition
· Look for cracks on cylinder block and head.
· Check oil leaks, especially around gaskets and seals.
· Inspect for rust or water damage (signs of flood engine).
· Check if the engine has been painted (often hides problems).
2、Compression Test (Most Important)
· Healthy petrol engine: 125–175 PSI per cylinder.
· Healthy diesel engine: 300–450 PSI per cylinder.
· All cylinders must be within 10% of each other.
· Low compression = worn rings, valves, or head gasket.
3、Start & Sound Check
· Crank smoothly, no long cranking.
· No knocking, ticking, or rattling noises.
· Idle stable, no shaking.
· No blue smoke (burning oil), black smoke (rich fuel), or white smoke (coolant leak).
4、Check Mileage & Origin
· JDM engines: usually 80k–120k km, well-maintained.
· Avoid engines from accident cars with front impact.
· Ask for chassis code matching to avoid wrong engine.
5、Avoid These Red Flags
· Overheated engine (discolored head, burnt smell).
· Flooded engine (rust inside, electrical damage).
· Rebuilt engine with no warranty.
· Price too low (too good to be true).
