White smoke coming out of exhaust is one of the most searched problems for vehicle owners. It shows different faults between cold start and continuous running. We explain all reasons and low-cost fixes for petrol and diesel engines.
1、Normal white smoke (No repair needed)
In early morning or cold weather, thin white steam appears on cold start. This is just water vapor inside exhaust pipes. It will disappear after the engine warms up. This is normal for Toyota 1ZR, 2ZR, 1AZ, 2AZ, Nissan KA24 and Hyundai G4FC.
2、Thick white smoke all the time (Serious fault)
Blown head gasket: Coolant leaks into combustion chamber. Engine will overheat easily, coolant level drops fast. Common on old 1AZ-FE and Isuzu 4JB1.
Cracked cylinder head or block: Water enters cylinders. Do not drive the vehicle, or it will cause total engine damage.
3、White smoke with strong fuel smell (Diesel engines)
Mainly happens on Cummins 4BT1, 6BT1, 6CT1, 6L and Isuzu 4JB1. The reason is poor atomization of injectors or wrong fuel injection timing. It leads to incomplete combustion.
Fix Suggestions
For head gasket failure: Replace gasket and check cylinder head flatness.
For injector issues: Clean or replace injectors, adjust injection timing.
Never run an engine with continuous thick white smoke.
