How to Spot a Fake Used Engine – Avoid Scams

06-07

Many vehicle owners and workshop operators across Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East prefer used JDM engines. They cost less than brand new units, fit most local commercial vehicles and have easy-to-find spare parts. However, the market is filled with rebuilt, crashed and second-grade engines. Buying these unqualified products will lead to frequent breakdowns and extra repair costs. This guide shares practical ways to check engine quality before you place an order.

1. Check the overall appearance and external parts

First, look over the engine block and cylinder head carefully. A good used engine from Japan has smooth surface without cracks, dents or welding marks. If you see obvious welds on the block, this unit was damaged in collision and is not safe for long-term use.

Check bolt conditions next. Factory original engines have matched paint marks on connecting bolts. Large areas of scratch marks or repeatedly loosened bolts mean the engine has been fully disassembled and rebuilt. Such rebuilt engines always have unstable performance.

2. Test for oil and water leakage

Oil leak and water leak are common faults on poor-quality engines. You can check the valve cover, oil pan, water pipe joints and thermostat base.

For Nissan KA20DE which fits Caravan E24 E25, Atlas F23 and Navara D22 Datsun Truck, the thermostat base is a weak point. Plastic bases tend to crack after long use. If leakage occurs here, the engine will overheat easily.

Qualified stock engines keep dry on all joint positions. No fresh oil stains or water traces can be found around the whole unit.

3. Listen to running sound and check idle stability

Start the engine and let it run for 3 to 5 minutes. A reliable motor runs smoothly with steady idle speed. No strange knocking, rattling or harsh noise comes from inside.

Pay attention to cold start performance. Cold start rattle from timing chain tensioner often appears on high-mileage engines like KA20DE, KA24DE and Toyota 2AZ-FE. Mild noise is acceptable, but loud continuous rattle means the tensioner needs immediate replacement.

4. Measure cylinder pressure (Compression Test)

Cylinder pressure is the most important standard to judge engine health. For 4-cylinder commercial engines such as KA20DE, 2TR-FE, 4BT and 6BT, normal compression range stays between 12 bar and 13 bar. All cylinders should have close pressure data.

Low cylinder pressure stands for worn piston rings or valve seal failure. This kind of engine will burn oil seriously and lose power quickly. We never supply units with unqualified compression data.

Confirm service history: No flood, no overheat, no accident

Never buy flood-damaged engines. Water inside the cylinder will corrode internal parts and cause permanent faults. Overheated engines usually have deformed cylinder heads and blown head gaskets, which cannot be fixed completely.

Our Supply & Wholesale Service

We specialize in wholesale of original JDM used engines. All units are dismantled from local Japanese vehicles, no assembling, no reboring cylinder. Our main stock includes Nissan KA20DE, KA24DE, Toyota 2AZ-FE, 1AZ-FE, 2TR-FE, Cummins 4BT, 6BT and other mainstream models.

Every engine goes through full inspections before delivery, including cold start test, compression test, leakage check and running test. We have large quantity of ready stock, support 1 unit minimum order and bulk order. Goods are packed with solid wooden cases and foam for safe sea and land transportation, suitable for shipment to Southeast Asia, Middle East and Africa.
